Do’s and Don’ts for Separated Parents

Social media for separated parents can be a mindfield – one false step can result in an explosion of epic proportions.

For newly separated parents we suggest that you stay off social media until your matter is resolved and the emotions of the separation have become a distant memory, but if that is not achievable here are some do’s and don’ts for social media when you are a separated parent.

Do

  • Share information regarding your child’s activities and achievements.
  • Communicate via private message as opposed to open posts.
  • Remember that anything on Social media could be accessed by your children or used in legal proceedings.

Don’t

  • Post anything that you would not read out to your parents.
  • Overshare your “happy” experiences – remember how this kind of sharing makes you feel when the children are with the other parent.
  • Post anything about your Family Law case if you are in the court system – the publication of information regarding Family Law proceedings  without the consent of the court is actually illegal.
