In the light of recent ‘One Punch Can Kill’ media campaigns the Victorian Government has announced their intention to introduce mandatory minimum sentencing of 10 years for ‘king-hit’ killers, following the example set in New South Wales after public outrage when Kieran Loveridge received a 4 year sentence for punching Thomas Kelly at King’s Cross in Sydney, resulting in Kelly’s death.

The events of a week in mid October in the Queensland Legislative Assembly were quite remarkable. Within one week the Liberal National Government introduced and passed urgent legislation to effect significant legislative reforms namely the Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment Act 2013 (Qld) (“VLAD Act”) and the Criminal Law (Criminal Organisations Disruption) Amendment Act 2013.

It would come as no surprise to you that it is an offence to stalk another person. Stalking is a serious offence that can generally only be dealt with in the District Court. However, what constitutes the offence and the role which social media (via text messages, chat rooms, Facebook, etc) are playing in recording what was otherwise verbal interactions is an area that parents should take particular note of.
