On Tuesday 29th January 2013 Gene Paterson and I had a very enjoyable duty to perform in representing Macrossan & Amiet at Paul Stasuik’s admission as a Solicitor in the Supreme Court at Rockhampton. Paul worked at Macrossan & Amiet for four (4) years, and his employment ended in December 2012 when Paul and his family moved to Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast.
Paul has had a very interesting life. He was born in Canada and spent his childhood and post school years working in the family publishing business in Ottawa. He came to Australia to develop a distribution network for his family business. After a year or two he decided to make Australia his home, and is involvement with the family business ceased. Over the years Paul had a number of different career paths and worked as professional diver, and as a Gaming Officer/Supervisor at Cairns Casino, worked in the IT industry and worked as a student teacher.
Paul used his spare time to study. He completed part of a degree in Leisure Studies; completed a degree course and obtained a Bachelor of Computer Science from the James Cook University in 2004. Paul completed a Bachelor of Education degree at QUT in Brisbane in 2010 and he completed his Bachelor of Laws degree course at QUT in 2011.
Paul is an all-round sportsman. As a youth he played many sports including basketball, baseball and gridiron all to a level which meant he could have considered a life as a professional sportsman.
During the course of the admission ceremony Paul’s career and achievements were read out for the benefit of His Honour Justice McMeekin. In addition to his academic achievements Mr Crow, Senior Counsel of Rockhampton, advised that Paul had also found the time to obtain a single figure golf handicap. Justice McMeekin, upon hearing all of Paul’s achievements in his life to date turned to Paul and posed the humorous and rhetorical question, “Are you sure that you really want to be admitted as a Lawyer?”.
Paul married a Queensland girl, Sarah and they now have two (2) boys who are attending primary school. Paul achieved well during his employment at Macrossan & Amiet and made many friends amongst staff at this office. His farewell by all office staff was testament to his friendliness and to the regard held of him by all staff.
Paul says that he has hopes of one day making his way back to North Queensland, and, in particular to this firm in Mackay. He would be welcomed back. In the meantime we all wish Paul good luck in his new career (which he says will be his last career change!).
