What happens to your social network accounts when you pass away?

We should all be aware of the importance of a well written and up to date Will to deal with our physical assets when we pass away, but what happens to our digital possessions such as social networking accounts? Facebook have answered this question by creating a new feature called Legacy.

Legacy allows you to choose a legacy contact who will ultimately have control of your account upon your death however, will not be able to delete posts or pictures, remove friends or see any private messages. The legacy contact will however, be able to post details of a memorial service or funeral, a final message or any other information that they feel needs to be shared as well as accept friend requests.

Facebook is the first social media network to take this step however, it is likely that the others will follow suit shortly creating a similar option.

The option is currently only available in the US however, Facebook have indicated that the option will be available in other countries ‘soon’. We will keep you updated on when that happens.
