Currently in Queensland double demerit points are applied to individuals who repeatedly commit offences relating to seatbelts, motorbike helmets and exceeding the speed limit by more than 20km per hour. Double demerit points are accrued if a second similar offence is committed within a year after the first offence.
In Queensland double demerit points apply all year round for these offences.
From 1 September 2015, double demerit points will also apply for a second or subsequent mobile phone offence committed by drivers within a year of an earlier like offence. Using a mobile phone whilst driving attracts 3 demerit points. If a person commits a second mobile phone offence then they will receive 6 demerit points.
With the allocation of 9 demerit points in such quick succession it may result in a licence sanction or place your driver licence in jeopardy of being suspended.
Mobile phone offences committed before 1 September 2015 will not be counted in the calculations for the allocation of double demerit points.
