Shake up for Electric Scooters

The commercial electric scooter company touched down in Mackay on 11 May 2022, since then the new form of transport has become to go to for children, teens and adults alike.  From Tuesday 1 November 2022 new rules and increased penalties will come into effect.

A result of the public’s demands to crack down on the misuse of e-scooters, the transport minister announced that the crackdown will include:-

  1. The reduction of the speed limit to 12km/h on footpaths and shared paths, unless otherwise signed.  The 25km/h limit applies everywhere else, including bike lanes and local streets.
  2. Increased fines as follows:-
    1. $1,078 for dangerous offences involving speed, use on prohibited roads, and holding a mobile phone while riding.
    2. $431 for drinking alcohol while riding.
    3. $143 for not wearing a helmet.
    4. $143 for doubling, the act of riding with two or more people.
    5. $172 for riding on a prohibited road.
  3. Fines are applicable for speeding over the relevant speed limit as follows:-
    1. $143 for over 1-13km/h
    2. $215 for over 14-20km/h
    3. $359 for over 20-30km/h
    4. $575 for over 30km/h
  4. Electric scooters can be ridden in bike lanes on roads with a speed limit of 50km/h or less, and all on-road bike lanes that are physically separated.
  5. Electric scooters must follow road rules such as stopping at red lights.
  6. Bells are required to be on the handlebars and must be used on electric scooters

While everyone of all ages and abilities use our foot paths, not everyone can easily move around if an accident occurs due to dangerous or intoxicated driving.  Please remember that while electric scooters can be used in public spaces and road related areas in Queensland, you must obey the road rules and ride responsibility.
