New Laws to Protect Subcontractors
The Queensland Government is proposing a number of amendments to the Building and Construction Industry Payment Act in a bid to combat the problems with subcontractors not being paid for work done by them when the Head Contractor becomes insolvent.
Driving in Queensland on an Interstate Licence
Interstate driver licences holders are allowed to drive in Queensland, provided they comply with the conditions of a Queensland driver licence. The same also generally applies for Queensland driver licences holders who drive interstate. However, there are certain circumstances when an interstate driver licence holder’s authority to drive in Queensland will be withdrawn.
Dudley Denny Library
During construction of the recently opened Dudley Denny Library, there was some concern or trepidation by members of the public, although it has only been opened for several months the number of patrons using the library has at least doubled. Not only will you experience the traditional library such as the availability to borrow books, you will also experience a myriad of other activities and facilities that one could not possibly expect to be found in a traditional library.

It is probably no surprise to the readers of this article that there are many people in our community that are currently experiencing financial stress in one way or another. Earlier this month, the first person to be charged under Queensland’s “one punch can kill laws” pleaded guilty to the unlawful striking a 55 year old man who died from extensive injuries to the head caused by a single punch.
$1.3 Million Payout
An Adverse Action Claim lodged on behalf of a drill rig operator who was wrongfully stood down from his employment, has led to Hail Creek Coal Pty Ltd being ordered by the Federal Court of Australia to pay almost $1.3 million in compensation to the worker.

SMSF Beneficiary Nominations
It is not well-known or understood that on a Member’s death their superannuation benefits do not automatically form part of their estate. Nor can they be given away by a person’s Will. Most Superannuation Fund Trust Deeds require the Trustee to take into account the Member’s beneficiary nomination. Any person setting up a SMSF should ensure that they put in place a valid death benefit nomination.
